Castles & Medieval Villages, Wiltshire
The Itinerary
The countryside in this unspoilt corner of Wiltshire is very beautiful. I love it here. It is undiscovered and full of treasures with large impressive country estates, idyllic little villages and a graceful castle.
Following a leisurely breakfast your first gentle trail will encounter an 18th century castle. You'll explore gorgeous villages and enjoy lunch at a country pub before walking onto Old Wardour Castle.
This 14th century building is England's only hexagonal castle. Despite the heavy canon fire it took in the civil war you can walk inside to marvel at the great banqueting hall and wander through the state bedrooms. Best selling author Kathy Lette came and walked here with Foot Trails and absolutely loved it!
On the second day enjoy another relaxing day. Explore a chain of magnificent unspoilt villages that date to medieval times. Many of the thatched cottages here have stood for centuries. If they could speak, they would tell you tales of the knights of the 13th century crusades.
Castles and Medieval Villages is a 2 night weekend or mid week walking break starting on Friday or Sunday evening. The walking is at an enjoyable pace. Saturday we walk 6 miles (9.6km), Sunday 5 miles (8 km).
