Dear Alison and David,
Thank you for a wonderful walk through frozen Wiltshire! Here are a few pictures to recall it. Reaching the summit of Win Green as the sun dropped away and our shadows lengthened was pure magic! The inn provided a cheering warmth and great meals. We feel strengthened for whatever the New Year will bring.
Peter and Georgina

Included in your holiday
Your 5 night guided walking holiday begins Monday evening at 7.30pm with a complimentary glass of wine. (Arrive earlier if you wish, a complimentary walk is available for the afternoon). Welcomed by Foot Trails founder Alison Howell, a relaxing evening start to your weekend in the bar by the fire, before dinner, will be a chance to meet your fellow guests and hear about your weekends walks.
Wake to a leisurely breakfast, a treat in itself. David your guide will meet you for an enjoyable
paced 8 mile walk. Through forest, with its Oaks, Larch, Pine and Redwoods. Past the site of a 13th century priory and onto land owned by the Duke of Somerset. Into woodland glades, sprinkled with patches of wild Bluebell, white Wild Garlic, Anemones and more. Look out for deer.
The following day, a leisurely start before our morning walk sees us starting out on the sweeping chalk downs called the Deverills (Deverill means diving rill, an ancient waterway). You can enjoy vistas over the downs and down into the valleys below, where ancient villages sit, church towers peeking out. This ancient area has Saxon connections, including a visit from King Alfred. You will enjoy lunch at an old coaching inn, then onto lakes and an ornamental walk lined by pink and colourful Azaleas and Rhododendron.
We begin the day on a Neolithic causeway camp, you will be immersed in both tremendous views and history. Iron age and Bronze age settlement sites are also on our your route. We pick up the former coaching road, where highwaymen in the 18th century stopped the horse and carriages to rob the unaware passengers. The afternoon brings us to the historic house and magnificent landscape gardens of Stourhead (entrance included), you can enjoy plenty of spring colour from the bulbs and Bluebells and marvel at the carefully created vistas.
A new walk for 2012, Alfred's Story, following guest feedback. Today's walk brings fresh green stretches of woodland with their spring flowers and early leaf buds. Stories and tales of King Alfred abound, and it is nearby that he raised his standard in battle against the Danes. We lunch at a traditional English country pub, with flagstone floors and fireplaces.
Our last day is a The Wizard's Hill, a walk that will lead us to Beech woodland with a true carpet of indigo Bluebells. We will take a narrow path through the carpet of flowers, for a wonderful experience of colour and scent. With Buzzards often flying overhead, their shrill cry on the wind, and carpets of Bluebells, Orchids, Wood Anemone and Yellow Archangel at our feet.
