How walking can help your team Our unique approach
Have you ever considered walking as a way to develop you or your team?
There are many reasons that Foot Trails choose to use walking as our approach.
For personal change or development to take place, people first need to wake up and be aware. Aware not only of the situation in front of them, but also of people around them and most definitely, aware of themselves.
It helps enormously to go out of our usual environment from time to time, when it is much easier to develop this level of awareness without your usual distractions or habits. Instead the time you have is focused solely on yourself, your challenges and your goals.
Walking in rural countryside is a brilliant way for aiding development of awareness, building relationships, aiding clear thinking and therefore change and development.
Unlike many traditional corporate activities, walking is not a competitive activity, and can be enjoyed by many. It takes place outside in a natural environment with fresh air, open spaces and nature, something which in itself brings countless benefits.
Walking is a gentle and very enjoyable form of exercise, contrary to some beliefs it doesn't require more then a general level of fitness or super endurance. It brings many benefits to the individual, opening the lungs, improving the heart and helping the mind, reducing depression and anxiety and increasing calmness.
Combining it with the rural countryside enables those taking part to be immersed in a spectacular environment of views, breath-taking landscapes, ancient pathways and medieval villages. This special part of England is in most modern lives a world away from computers, office buildings and 9 to 5 lives.
We first came across the many benefits of walking talking with our guests when organising leisure walks. Many guests found the space to reflect and the walking enabled them to see things more clearly and then to make decisions about important things happening in their lives. In fact some trips were followed by letters or phone calls thanking us and letting us know of an important decision made since the trip
In 2008 we were approached by a senior manager at MARS, who had been on one of our walking holidays as a leisure guest and was convinced it would help her team. Our first corporate Foot Trail resulted in a 2 nights event in Wiltshire and since we have worked with other companies including Aspen Insurance and John Lewis.
Foot Trails was chosen for our local knowledge and walking experience, friendly but professional approach, and attention to detail and organisational skills. These companies also commented that most other corporate events they had been involved in were too competitive and aggressive which had resulted in an environment that only benefited those already confident and outgoing and did little to benefit those that felt embarrassed about taking part.
Feeling like this is certainly not conducive to helping people or teams develop.
Walking requires little equipment, just sturdy waterproof shoes or boots, a warm fleece and comfortable clothes, and of course a light waterproof jacket incase of some inclement English Weather. If you would like us to provide waterproof jackets then we can arrange this for you.
These are some of the reasons that something as seemingly simple and noncompetitive as walking could help open up your team and lead to change and development in the members of your team.
